The UPSC Civil Services Examination is conducted annually in three stages: Preliminary, Mains, and Interview (Personality Test). It recruits for prestigious services including Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS), and 21 other Group A and Group B services. The exam demands exceptional dedication, typically 1–2 years of intensive preparation. Around 10 lakh candidates appear, and only approximately 1,000 are selected. Despite the difficulty, a UPSC selection opens the door to top administrative positions in India.

Preparation Strategy

1. 12-18 Month Plan: UPSC preparation requires at least 12–18 months. Start early and follow a strict daily schedule. 2. NCERTs First: Read all NCERT books from Class 6–12 for History, Geography, Polity, Economics, and Science. This builds the foundation. 3. Standard Books: After NCERTs, move to standard books – Laxmikanth for Polity, Bipan Chandra for History, Certificate Physical and Human Geography for Geography. 4. Newspaper Reading: Read The Hindu or Indian Express every day. Maintain notes on important events, government schemes, and international affairs. 5. Answer Writing: For Mains, answer writing practice is crucial. Write at least 2 answers daily from Day 1 of Mains preparation. 6. Optional Subject: Choose an optional subject you're comfortable with. High-scoring optionals include Geography, Public Administration, History, and Sociology. 7. Prelims Strategy: Prelims cutoff is high. Focus on Current Affairs and Geography which are most dynamic and high-scoring. 8. Interview: Read your DAF (Detailed Application Form) thoroughly.
